Day 1 of the festival was probably one of the greatest days in rock and roll history. Okay, maybe that's a bit of an overstatement, but it was definitely right up there as far as I'm concerned. Here are some notes on all the bands that I saw that fine day.

Metallica : 2006 brings the 20th anniversay of Master Of Puppets and to celebrate they played the whole album. That alone is enough to make this one of the best gigs in their history. Adding the Unforgiven, which I hadn't heard live before, didn't hurt. Unfortunately due our travelling situation, Brent and I were forced to miss the last six songs. It would have been nice to hear Cantrell sing on Nothing Else Matters and to hear Damage Case, much less with Lemmy, but I can't complain. I heard Orion live. Eveything else is secondary.

Queens Of The Stone Age : Even though I saw them four times the previous year, I was still excited to see them again. Song For The Deaf and Song for the Dead? Excellent. The rest of the setlist was great - I love all the songs they played (other than Monsters). I heard First It Giveth for the first time.

Alice In Chains : I though I would never get a chance to see this band live. I'm glad they have decided to come back. William Duvall did a great job singing Layne's parts. It's not the same without Layne, but I wasn't expecting that from him. It was good to hear songs that Cantrell didn't perform during his solo years. Rain When I Die, Again, and Down In A Hole were my highlights.

Alter Bridge : They were okay.

Avenged Sevenfold : I really enjoy City Of Evil and that's what they mainly played. They also added a cover of Pantera's Walk. Good show.

Stone Sour : They sucked.

Bullet For My Valentine : I guess they are part of the new metal formula. The only problem is that they don't have the melody that some of the other bands have. Maybe I need to listen to their album before judging too harshly.

Trivium : Excellent show. These guys can really play and I love the aggressive music. I wish they went on later in the day so that they could do a longer set. The new song, Detonation, sounded pretty good. I'm looking forward to the new album.
